3 Things|Year of the Black Girl

giphy

Out from under the heels of bias social norms black women are claiming what is theirs and refusing to apologize.  From film to social media to music to politics; black girls are making a name for themselves and letting the ladder down to bring their sisters up. It’s been a long time coming, and I’m so glad the changes are finally here. My three things this month is a shout out to the supporters and encouragers of all things Black Girl Magic.

Lemonade

People always have a lot to say about Beyonce, but as an artist she is unstoppable.  Her latest project, Lemonade, is proof that she, and black girls everywhere,  stay winning.  I personally thought Formation was the black girl anthem of the year, but it was only the beginning.  Scene after scene of Lemonade depicted our wounds, loves, sacrafices, joys, and strength in such a beautiful way. Watching the visuals it’s hard not to get emotional.  If nothing else it screams we are strong and we need to stick together. I love her for her effort to employ and put more brown faces on the screen. I appreciate her effort to make brown girls feel special and important.

Essence Black Girl Magic Docuseries

“6 Girls. 6 Stories. 6 Dreams”

sage-adams-trailer_400x295_37

Since the year started Essence has made it known that they planned to blow the phrase Black Girl Magic all the way up.  Their February issue was thought provoking, the Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon was inspiring, and the details that went into this docuseries deserve a standing ovation.   The docuseries follow six young black women on a quest to stand out and make a difference. This and other pieces like it are so important because these young girls are our future.

Breaking down the walls

SheaMoisure’s latest advertisement celebrates natural hair and it’s inclusion into main stream beauty.  When I first saw this commercial all I could say was “girl yes!”  That tiny little ethnic section in Walmart (and other place) is pathetic.  I appreciate SheaMoisture for saying “no more.”  I hope this aisle move will prompt others to push for the change AND also cause for fully stocked shelves.

OK ladies!!! Let’s stay in formation.  Follow me on Instagram so you don’t miss any of my black girl fly + say up on our posts by subscribing.
